The 29th Georgia Infantry is the Oldest best established Confederate Re-enactment unit in the state of Maine. It's three
dozen members of soldiers and civilians span the state from Bangor to Portland and as far west as Livermore Falls. It
has a notable safety record and works mutually with sister units to create quality and family friendly events.
The unit had a humble beginning in 1986 as a off shoot of the 20th Maine Co B Re-enacting unit. There were only
two units in the state back then and both were Federals. Occassionally the Federals would attempt to portray Confederate
troops by dressing down and literally tying ropes around their waists as belts. This Styreo-type was seen as extremely
disrespectful to the actual Confederate soldiers. Several members then banded together and began a more correct
portrayal. By 1988, the group had 6 regular member and decided to incorporate in 1989.
The unit was very sucessful and active until a split in 1992. The fueding did nothing but cause further rifts
and eventually the 29th GVI became inactive after 1993, with only a few members attending 1 or 2 events per year. The
splinter group eventually merged with an out of state group before ceasing to exsist.
In 2000, the group was reactivated and began recruiting for new members. By 2003, the unit had doubled it's size
and became a member unit of the Liberty Greys (6th Regiment) 1 Division, ANV. The unit has since left this organization
(2009) due to indifferences in political/ heritage issues and changes in the organzational insurance coverage.
In 2004, the unit added an Artillery contingent. This year (2005), the unit hosted the State's largest Civil
War event, with approximately 170 participants attending at Bowdoin, Maine. It was the largest contingent
of Confederate troops to ever assemble on Maine soil. (approximately 60 Southern soldiers campaigning a yankee force
roughly the same size.)
